MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the "The Time of Our Lives" Television project is to:
· Inspire
our audience, as well as the volunteers, with the
joy of life, and with a
feeling of increased self-esteem.
· Provide
older adults with opportunities for diversity across
generational an ethnic lines,
with information on a variety
of subjects and resources
for this age group, and with
social opportunities in
the wider community.
· Empower
older adults with life-long learning opportunities
and a sense of ownership
of the project.
The project is based on the deep commitment
to life-long learning
fostered by Bloomington Public Schools Community Education.
It reflects the unique dynamic spirit generated by volunteers
using
multiple community resources.

HISTORY
In 1990 the Bloomington Public Schools decided to implement its
policy of "lifelong learning" by surveying the older
adult population to find out how best to meet their educational
needs. Discovering that there were at least 23,000 residents over
the age of 55, the director of Community Education decided to
use Cable Television Public Access to reach out to this large
group of residents. After five pilot programs with an experimental
format, the final program that resulted was named THE TIME OF
OUR LIVES. Topics of interest to older adult such as "Health
& Fitness", "Travel," "Entertainment,"
and "Protecting Your Rights" were first presented as
a program "for older adults, by older adults." Fifteen
volunteers learned to incorporate all aspects of television production
into this project. In addition to the Bloomington Public Schools,
major sponsors have been The Medtronic Foundation, Chanhassen
Dinner Theatres, the Lorenz Bus Company, and Herff-Jones Company.
Over the years, we have won many awards through the Minnesota
Community Television Awards program. In addition, our tapes have
been accepted into the archives of the Minnesota Historical Society.
Now, 115 shows and eighteen years later, our show is still going
strong.
